The police in Ebonyi on Monday confirmed the killing of a police officer on Sunday by gunmen.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi Police Command, Chris Anyanwu, told journalists that more information on the incident would be made public later.
He also confirmed that another officer from the command sustained gunshot
wounds in the incident which took place at Ude Street in Hausa Quarters, Abakaliki.
A witness said the two police officers were on duty at the Abacha Roundabout, near the area.
“They went to the Hausa Quarters to buy sachet water and suya meat when three men driving in a Toyota Camry opened fire on them,” the witness said.
The police spokesperson said the gunmen took the rifles of the police officers and sped off.
He said the police had made some arrests in the area and those arrested were already helping the investigation.
Most shops and other business outlets in the area were closed while police patrolled the area on Monday.
